Dr. Bayless graduated from the University of Missouri - Columbia medical school where he was elected to the prestigious Alpha Omega Alpha medical honors society. To be eligible for the Alpha Omega Alpha society, a student must be in the top 15 percent of their class and must exhibit high moral and ethical standards. Dr. Bayless moved to Irving, TX in 1983 when he started his orthopedic training at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center and its affiliated hospitals. During his orthopedic training, Dr. Bayless spent three months in Norwich, England where he received instruction from Dr. McKee and worked directly with Dr. Farrar. Areas of Specialization

Minimally Invasive Surgery

Dr. Bayless enjoys all aspects of general orthopedic surgery but his focus is on minimally invasive surgery. Utilizing his extensive experience in joint reconstruction he is now able to perform total hip replacements with incisions as small as three inches and total knee replacements with incisions as small as four inches. Dr. Bayless has utilized a "sub-vastus" or "quadriceps sparing" approach for total knee replacements for over 18 years. This type of approach goes around and under the quadricepsthigh muscle rather than the standard approach of cutting through the muscle. Minimally invasive total knee replacement combined with the quadriceps sparing approach can lead to a more rapid recovery due to less damage to the muscle and soft tissues. With less damage to the tissues there can be less pain, bleeding and scar formation. Patients who have minimally invasive total hip replacements also often enjoy less pain and bleeding due to the much smaller surgical incision and much less soft tissue trauma. With these minimally invasive surgical techniques many patients are able to rapidly return to their normal lifestyles.

Partial Knee Replacement

When arthritis affects only one compartment of the knee, a partial knee or uni-compartmental knee replacement can sometimes be performed. Dr. Bayless has performed successful uni-compartment knee replacements for over 18 years. With minimally invasvie surgical techniques, a uni-compartment knee replacement can now be performed through an incision just over three inches long. Most patients who have a partial knee replacement recover much faster than patients recovering from a total knee replacement.

Arthroscopic Surgery

Dr. Bayless has performed thousands of successful arthroscopic shoulder and knee surgeries. He was the first surgeon to perform arthroscopically assisted ACL knee reconstruction as well as the first to perform arthroscopic shoulder surgery at Irving Community Hospital which is now the Baylor-Irving Hospital. He continues to perform all types of shoulder and knee arthroscopic procedures. Dr. Bayless has performed hundreds of endoscopic carpal tunnel release surgeries over teh last 10 years. Endoscopic carpal tunnel release is a highly successful surgery performed through a tiny incision at the wrist and can lead to a much faster recovery than standard open carpal tunnel release.
